Sealing stone surfaces should be done every 2-3 years. This will provide lasting protection and keep your home looking beautiful. There are various reasons that need to be examined prior to sealing the natural stone. You need to know if the stone needs to be sealed or not. Will sealing cause damage? Will it react to the resin in the stone.

Do I need Stone Sealing?

• How dense or hard is the stone?
• Is the stone subject to environmental stainings, such as; rust from metals, spills from outdoor activities or direct sunlight?
• A polished surface can be more resistant to staining. If the surface is close to, or in an area that could potentially stain the surface, then a polished surface may be the best option for sealing. 
• If the stone is sealed, will it change the colour of the stone? This needs to be considered because you won’t want your beautiful stone’s colours changed due to sealing. Sealers can alter the surface of the stone. 

Does the stone have resin on it? You need to know if the resin will react in a negative way to the sealer used. This could be a potential disaster waiting to happen. Make sure you can identify this prior to stone sealing. 

Final Thoughts

Once the stone is sealed, it will have a lasting resistance to dirt, spills and stains. If the stone surface is in a location or reacts badly to the sealer, it is best to leave it unsealed. Testing should be carried out before application. 

Just because your surfaces are made from natural stone, does not necessarily mean that you need to have them sealed. Sealing is meant to provide protection from the elements, stains, rust and other issues. But, sometimes and in some situations, natural stone is best left without being sealed.
